    Design and analysis of a scalable terabit multicast packet switch : architecture and scheduling algorithms

    Internet growth and success not only open a primary route of information exchange for millions of people around the world, but also create unprecedented demand for core network capacity. Existing switches/routers, due to the bottleneck from either switch architecture or arbitration complexity, can reach a capacity on the order of gigabits per second, but few of them are scalable to large capacity of terabits per second. In this dissertation, we propose three novel switch architectures with cooperated scheduling algorithms to design a terabit backbone switch/router which is able to deliver large capacity, multicasting, and high performance along with Quality of Service (QoS). Our switch designs benefit from unique features of modular switch architecture and distributed resource allocation scheme. Switch I is a unique and modular design characterized by input and output link sharing. Link sharing resolves output contention and eliminates speedup requirement for central switch fabric. Hence, the switch architecture is scalable to any large size. We propose a distributed round robin (RR) scheduling algorithm which provides fairness and has very low arbitration complexity. Switch I can achieve good performance under uniform traffic. However, Switch I does not perform well for non-uniform traffic. Switch II, as a modified switch design, employs link sharing as well as a token ring to pursue a solution to overcome the drawback of Switch 1. We propose a round robin prioritized link reservation (RR+POLR) algorithm which results in an improved performance especially under non-uniform traffic. However, RR+POLR algorithm is not flexible enough to adapt to the input traffic. In Switch II, the link reservation rate has a great impact on switch performance. Finally, Switch III is proposed as an enhanced switch design using link sharing and dual round robin rings. Packet forwarding is based on link reservation. We propose a queue occupancy based dynamic link reservation (QOBDLR) algorithm which can adapt to the input traffic to provide a fast and fair link resource allocation. QOBDLR algorithm is a distributed resource allocation scheme in the sense that dynamic link reservation is carried out according to local available information. Arbitration complexity is very low. Compared to the output queued (OQ) switch which is known to offer the best performance under any traffic pattern, Switch III not only achieves performance as good as the OQ switch, but also overcomes speedup problem which seriously limits the OQ switch to be a scalable switch design. Hence, Switch III would be a good choice for high performance, scalable, large-capacity core switches

    Hierarchical Cross-modal Transformer for RGB-D Salient Object Detection

    Most of existing RGB-D salient object detection (SOD) methods follow the CNN-based paradigm, which is unable to model long-range dependencies across space and modalities due to the natural locality of CNNs. Here we propose the Hierarchical Cross-modal Transformer (HCT), a new multi-modal transformer, to tackle this problem. Unlike previous multi-modal transformers that directly connecting all patches from two modalities, we explore the cross-modal complementarity hierarchically to respect the modality gap and spatial discrepancy in unaligned regions. Specifically, we propose to use intra-modal self-attention to explore complementary global contexts, and measure spatial-aligned inter-modal attention locally to capture cross-modal correlations. In addition, we present a Feature Pyramid module for Transformer (FPT) to boost informative cross-scale integration as well as a consistency-complementarity module to disentangle the multi-modal integration path and improve the fusion adaptivity. Comprehensive experiments on a large variety of public datasets verify the efficacy of our designs and the consistent improvement over state-of-the-art models.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure

    Integrating Cell Phones into a Chinese High School EFL Classroom: Students’ Attitudes, Technological Readiness, and Perceived Learning

    Although explorations on cell phone-based learning (C-learning) in the field of teach­ing English as a foreign language (EFL) has been gaining increasing attention in the last 10 years, the explorations are constrained mainly to distance language teaching. Researchers have pointed out that mobile devices are most effective when combined with group activities, tradi­tional educational activities, and other information and communication technologies (Librero, Ramos, Ranga, Trinona, & Lambert, 2007; Stead, 2005). The purpose of this study was to in­vestigate the integration of a C-learning activity into a traditional EFL classroom by looking at students’ attitudes, technological readiness, perceived learning, and perceived appropriateness of the activity design. A total of 96 high school students from Xiamen, China participated in the study. Students’ survey responses, reflection papers, and final projects were collected and ana­lyzed. Findings of the study indicated that students enjoyed the activity. They found the activity interesting, inspiring, and effective for their English learning. Students had no technological anxieties related to the cell phone use. This study can contribute to the discussion on integrating cell phones for EFL teaching by providing a sample activity as well as students’ possible percep­tions and attitudes toward the activity

    TiAVox: Time-aware Attenuation Voxels for Sparse-view 4D DSA Reconstruction

    Four-dimensional Digital Subtraction Angiography (4D DSA) plays a critical role in the diagnosis of many medical diseases, such as Arteriovenous Malformations (AVM) and Arteriovenous Fistulas (AVF). Despite its significant application value, the reconstruction of 4D DSA demands numerous views to effectively model the intricate vessels and radiocontrast flow, thereby implying a significant radiation dose. To address this high radiation issue, we propose a Time-aware Attenuation Voxel (TiAVox) approach for sparse-view 4D DSA reconstruction, which paves the way for high-quality 4D imaging. Additionally, 2D and 3D DSA imaging results can be generated from the reconstructed 4D DSA images. TiAVox introduces 4D attenuation voxel grids, which reflect attenuation properties from both spatial and temporal dimensions. It is optimized by minimizing discrepancies between the rendered images and sparse 2D DSA images. Without any neural network involved, TiAVox enjoys specific physical interpretability. The parameters of each learnable voxel represent the attenuation coefficients. We validated the TiAVox approach on both clinical and simulated datasets, achieving a 31.23 Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) for novel view synthesis using only 30 views on the clinically sourced dataset, whereas traditional Feldkamp-Davis-Kress methods required 133 views. Similarly, with merely 10 views from the synthetic dataset, TiAVox yielded a PSNR of 34.32 for novel view synthesis and 41.40 for 3D reconstruction. We also executed ablation studies to corroborate the essential components of TiAVox. The code will be publically available.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure

    Growth Pattern in Chinese Children With 5α-Reductase Type 2 Deficiency: A Retrospective Multicenter Study

    Background5α-reductase type 2 deficiency (5αRD) is an autosomal recessive hereditary disease of the group of 46, XY disorders of sex development (DSD).ObjectiveTo study the growth pattern in Chinese pediatric patients with 5αRD.SubjectsData were obtained from 141 patients with 5αRD (age: 0–16 years old) who visited eight pediatric endocrine centers from January 2010 to December 2017.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, height, weight, and other relevant data were collected from the multicenter hospital registration database. Baseline luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone (T), and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) after human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) stimulation test were measured by enzyme enhanced chemiluminescence assay. Bone age (BA) was assessed using the Greulich-Pyle (G-P) atlas. Growth curve was constructed based on λ-median-coefficient of variation method (LMS).ResultsThe height standard deviation scores (HtSDS) and weight standard deviation scores (WtSDS) in 5αRD children were in the normal range as compared to normal boys. Significantly higher HtSDS was observed in patients with 5αRD who were <1 year old (t = 3.658, 2.103, P = 0.002, 0.048, respectively), and higher WtSDS in those <6 months old (t = 2.756, P = 0.012). Then HtSDS and WtSDS decreased gradually and fluctuated near the median of the same age until 13 years. WtSDS in 5αRD children from northern China were significantly higher than those from the south (Z = -2.670, P = 0.008). The variation tendency of HtSDS in Chinese 5αRDs was consistent with the trend of stimulating T. HtSDS and stimulating T in the external masculinization score (EMS) <7 group were slightly higher than those in EMS ≥ 7 group without significant difference. Additionally, the ratio of BA over chronological age (BA/CA) was significantly <1 in children with 5αRD.ConclusionChildren with 5αRD had a special growth pattern that was affected by high levels of T, while DHT played a very small role in it. Their growth accelerated at age <1 year, followed by slowing growth and fluctuating height near normal median boys’ height. The BA was delayed in 5αRD children. Androgen treatment, which may be considered anyway for male 5αRD patients with a micropenis, may also be beneficial for growth

    Is the Core-cusp Problem a Matter of Perspective? Jeans Anisotropic Modeling against Numerical Simulations

    Mock member stars for 28 dwarf galaxies are constructed from the cosmological auriga simulation, which reflects the dynamical status of realistic stellar tracers. Axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (jam) modeling is applied to 6000 star particles for each system to recover the underlying matter distribution. The stellar or dark matter component individually is poorly recovered, but the total profile is constrained more reasonably. The mass within the half-mass radius of tracers is recovered the tightest, and the mass between 200 and 300 pc, M(200–300 pc), is an unbiasedly constrained ensemble, with a scatter of 0.167 dex. If using 2000 particles and only line-of-sight velocities with typical errors, the scatter in M(200–300 pc) is increased by ∼50%. Quiescent Saggitarius dSph–like systems and star-forming systems with strong outflows show distinct features, with M(200–300 pc) mostly underestimated for the former, and likely overestimated for the latter. The biases correlate with the dynamical status, which is a result of contraction motions due to tidal effects in quiescent systems or galactic winds in star-forming systems, driving them out of equilibrium. After including Gaia DR3 proper motion errors, we find proper motions can be as useful as line-of-sight velocities for nearby systems at < ∼60 kpc. By extrapolating the actual density profiles and the dynamical constraints down to scales below the resolution, we find the mass within 150 pc can be an unbiasedly constrained ensemble, with a scatter of ∼0.255 dex. We show that the contraction of member stars in nearby systems is detectable based on Gaia DR3 proper motion errors

    5-Fluorouracil targets thymidylate synthase in the selective suppression of TH17 cell differentiation

    While it is well established that treatment of cancer patients with 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) can result in immune suppression, the exact function of 5-FU in the modulation of immune cells has not been fully established. We found that low dose 5-FU selectively suppresses TH17 and TH1 cell differentiation without apparent effect on Treg, TH2, and significantly suppresses thymidylate synthase (TS) expression in TH17 and TH1 cells but has a lesser effect in tumor cells and macrophages. Interestingly, the basal expression of TS varies significantly between T helper phenotypes and knockdown of TS significantly impairs TH17 and TH1 cell differentiation without affecting the differentiation of either Treg or TH2 cells. Finally, low dose 5-FU is effective in ameliorating colitis development by suppressing TH17 and TH1 cell development in a T cell transfer colitis model. Taken together, the results highlight the importance of the anti-inflammatory functions of low dose 5-FU by selectively suppressing TH17 and TH1 immune responses

    Differential expression of cyclins CCNB1 and CCNG1 is involved in the chondrocyte damage of kashin-beck disease

    The purpose of this study was clarify the relationship between the differential expression of cyclins CCNB1 and CCNG1 and chondrocyte damage in Kashin-Beck disease. Systematic review and high-throughput sequencing of chondrocytes derived from Kashin-Beck disease patients were combined to identify the differentially expressed cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinase genes. In parallel, weaned SD rats were treated with low selenium for 4 weeks and then T-2 toxin for 4 weeks. Knee cartilage was collected to harvest chondrocytes for gene expression profiling. Finally, the protein expression levels of CCNB1 and CCNG1 were verified in knee cartilage tissue of Kashin-Beck disease patients and normal controls by immunohistochemical staining. The systematic review found 52 cartilage disease-related cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinase genes, 23 of which were coexpressed in Kashin-Beck disease, including 15 upregulated and 8 downregulated genes. Under the intervention of a low selenium diet and T-2 toxin exposure, CCNB1 (FC = 0.36) and CCNG1 (FC = 0.73) showed a downward expression trend in rat articular cartilage. Furthermore, compared to normal controls, CCNB1 protein in Kashin-Beck disease articular cartilage was 71.98% and 66.27% downregulated in the superficial and middle zones, respectively, and 12.06% upregulated in the deep zone. CCNG1 protein was 45.66% downregulated in the superficial zone and 12.19% and 9.13% upregulated in the middle and deep zones, respectively. The differential expression of cyclins CCNB1 and CCNG1 may be related to articular cartilage damage in Kashin-Beck disease
